Hi,
I wanted to remodel my kitchen to add hood vent and decided to get estimates but they are really very high. So I am thinking of doing this instead.

There is a vent hose under the cabinet which I think goes out to the chimney. I am thinking attaching some kind of fan directly here to move the air out of my kitchen, we cook a lot and cook all spicy food. So it is critical for us to do whatever works.

I am a new owner and really never done any DIY.

Appreciate any help or ideas with this.

I have no idea why that would connect to a chimney. You need to verify where it goes and deal with that per code before considering where your new hood will vent.

If that chimney is in use or could be used, having the duct stuffed with plastic is not good. Unused openings to a chimney would have needed to be properly discontinued.

Your climate and more information on the house, like what is on the other side of that wall would be helpful. But a kitchen exhaust has serious concerns dealing with condensation and grease.
