Restaining is out of the question---all surfaces would need to be sanded down to clean wood---

Paint and glaze will be your best choice.

Ditto......

Most cabinets...especially tract homes....are mass produced marginal quality at best.....with typical heavy use of particle board....if they do have a layer of real wood...it's thin at best....good chance it's actually paper made to look like wood.

If they look that bad...do as Mike said...then when you have the $$, replace with decent cabinets. Don't buy them from a big box store...go to real cabinet maker....the cost difference will be maybe 25% more....with a 100% better quality.

One other piece of advice....don't be in a rush to do all those fix up jobs on your new (used) house. Move in....get settled....then figure out what you really need to do to the house.

I'm with ddawg on this one.
One of the most common first time home buyer mistakes is to not take the time to live in the house a while to see if things like the roof leaks, it needs new windows, not enough insulation, plumbing or wiring issues that are far more important then the fofo stuff.

Might want to concider replacing the doors and drawer fronts and only have to refinish the boxes.
It would be a whole lot faster and with a factory finish should last a whole lot longer. There's hundreds of companys on line that sell them.

Here is a link to wet your appatite......it will at least give you an idea of what is out there.....

As a hobby woodworker.....I don't bother making my own doors any more....not worth my time....not when I can buy real wood in any size and style I want for what I consider cheaper than what I could make it for when I factor in my time.

And as Joe mentioned, there are companies that do refacing....look up foil refacing.

Thanks for the great tips.I have done alot of projects over the years just never had to tackle cabinets.This was soo helpful.hope I can return the kindness.
