I'm doing a kitchen gut remodel in a house built in 1923. Drain from sink, venting and pipe under basement floor were 1 1/2". This is in Saint Louis (city). Can I go back with 1 1/2" PVC to avoid digging up the basement floor even though 2" is code?

You can use any size you like-- but as you said, 2" is code :jester:
If it were me, I'd put 1.5" back and see what the inspector says.
The last thing you want is to run 2" down and connect to 1.5"- thats not good
