I'm new to remodeling kitchens and I wanted to upgrade it a little bit before we rent out. I want to put in a backsplash and just wanted to make sure there's no issues with installing it on the material in the picture. I think it's part of the bottom cabinetry. I just want to make sure it wouldn't mess anything up if we decide to replace the cabinets in the future. Thanks.

Difficult to see in the picture--Is there already a covering ? What is it made of?


If you redo the kitchen in the future---your new tile back splash will have to be removed--that covering is setting on the counter top.

It's a basic wood material. It's caulked to the lower cabinets but not to the top cabinets.

It looks like Melamine to me, Mike is right that will have to come off when you change out your cabinets as it is sitting on the counter top. Adding tile to that will make the back splash really stand out away from the wall heavy.

All back splashes are installed after the cabinets are installed. Why they chose this material is anyone's guess. If it is Melamine you will either have to remove it or install a backer board, I don't think tile will stick to that.

i was thinking that myself. they did some work behind there, and didn't feel like drywall/plaster repairs :confused1:

take that off. put some drywall or whatever to repair what may be there. then some cheap subway tiles.

I didn't think about that, I always use thinset so it just never crossed my mind, what little there is of it.

i used mastic once. it worked excellent. i will use it again, for a back splash.
