1980s-1990s Kilz was THE GO TO primer (oil base) It covered amazingly well, was cheap, and got you high

Today? Kilz is over price crap. Not worth the metal can its poured into.

Latex or oil:

Doesnt seal
Doesnt Cover
Doesnt go very far
costs a lot
doesnt get you high

Seriously, whats to like about it?

I have not had any issues with it.

I recently used KILZ 2 sealer and stainblocker on a bathroom wall. The wall was originally pink and we repainted it off-white. We used a single coat of KILZ allowing 24 hours prior to painting and have not had any bleed-through issues at all.

I agree that any latex version of KILZ is crap. Now, the oil-based version I still use occasionally when I can't get CoverStain. True, it's not what it once was......you can blame gov't regulations for that......but, it's decent enough. I used it this summer as my primer for cabinets in my own home. Bonds nicely to slick surfaces and, what I like most, it sands so nice. You can get a true "baby-butt" smooth surface after a good sanding, dust removal, and two coats of waterborne latex paint.

I recently painted two rooms with brand new drywall. Kilz2 latex worked fine, covered all the mud and joints in one coat, and left a good clean base for the top coats.

I'm not claiming that Kilz is the best. Clearly it isn't. I've used several of the Zinsser products and they are better.

At one-third the price of Zinsser, Kilz did the job adequately. $7.50 a gallon at Habitat ReStore.

Your local Habitat has it for $7.50 because some other store couldn't sell it and donated it rather than sit on their shelf indefinitely.

As far as interior oil primers, Coverstain or inslx primelock are the best budget options I have tested.
