Hello I am junior qs and need some advice on some termnology from a structural drawing.


Cut in vertical DPC into external brickwork. Stainless Steel Catnic stronghold connectors Install to manufacturers instructions. 'Disc out 50mm'. nom. wide slot in existing outer leaf to maintain continuous cavity between new and existing masonry.

what does disc out 50mm. nom mean?

It's when you are putting an extension on the end of a house with a cavity wall. Where the new cavity wall joins the house you need to cut out so the cavity is continuous. Or you can cut out a slot right through the brickwork and slide some DPC in.
Usually done with a disc cutter/angle grinder.

I find the 50mm nominal for the gaps between the new and the old to be exceedingly wide. 50mm is almost 2", I would expect that type of gap to be anywhere near that large.

It's not the gap between the new and old. It's where the external skin of the existing cavity wall returns. If the masonry wasn't cut out, the cavity would be bridged allowing a passage for damp. The one in the photo was cut out 100mm to match the new cavity that was 100mm to allow for the insulation.
