Hi there. Planted a jap-maple this time last year (more or less). Hasn’t died but definitely dropped leaves earlier than I expected and earlier than others in the yard. I’m not sure they are the exact same species but they’re close. And it never really looked that happy. But I know sometimes it takes a good solid year for them to get settled. Gets good light not too much and not direct for more than maybe four hours a day six hours tops. Irrigation head makes sure it gets water

attached some photos. There are some areas of the tree that are almost whitish gray and I’m wondering if I should just trim those areas off. Other areas are darker and look like they’re getting ready to start sprouting. So I want to give this bad boy his best chance at success this year. Wondering if some of those lighter areas I should lock off? Or just let it ride another year and see. Any suggestions appreciated

I would check with your local extension office. Usually a county office.
They might know or try the place you bought it.

I have always trimmed in the late fall. After the growing season is past.
Not sure that I would trim a year old tree.

Thanks all. I am inclined to not trim. But just surprised at all the grey-white branches. Can’t tell if dead. Maybe just dormant? Didn’t think that affected the branches so much though
