Hey all

I think I have caught a bone headed mistake early. I just finished some door openings (jambs/casings and moldings) and was doing some base moldings. The last home I owned used these same colonial moldings as pictured on the left throughout, for base and window/door. I just started laying them out, and I notice that most other moldings are like the one at the right, with the 2.5" colonial like on the left for all windows and doors.

Are the ones on the left typically not used on the floor? I just tried to cope an inside corner and it came out like crap due to the flat top of these moldings, which made me look and find this.

Better to use the molding to the right not the left one IMO.

The profile on the left is typically called ranch casing, and it is for putting around doors and windows. It normally is not used as base.

I think you need to pick one style of baseboard and stick with it throughout the house. That way, even if you pick something non-standard it looks like you did it ON PURPOSE, instead of looking like you cobbled together some random stuff.

Couldn't remember exactly what it looked like when you went to Lowes, could ya? :laughing: Been there, done that.

The last house I had, someone had used it for base all over the place, and it looked bad. Being the robot I am, I went and bought enough for the windows and walls. I installed it, and only found that it didn’t cope well.

So, this was a good save, only about an hour or so putting up the wrong moldings, which can be reused for the remains of my windows and doors. bullet dodged for now Thanks for the quick reply. I'll be thinking of you this weekend while I'm pulling nails!

The profile on the left is typically called ranch casing, and it is for putting around doors and windows. It normally is not used as base.

Correction the window casing that is on the left laying on the floor is a colonial profile and is door and window casing NOT base which has been established. A ranch profile is smooth, sorry termite no harm intended

The base on the right laid down on the floor IS a colonial profile and is either 2 3/4" or 3 1/4" high typically. The window and door casing typically are 2 1/4" wide.

Hah, no problem, thanks Paragon. I have retrimmed out the rooms and they look fabulous. This stuff copes very nice, the wife is happy, and I get to be the hero, happy endings all around
