Looking to repair/replace my front porch and garage doors which were painted by a previous owner and look hideous today.

Wondering if anyone can have a look at these pictures and tell me whether this wood is salvageable with a re-sand/primer and paint.. or am I better of replacing the wood with new and re-priming/painting myself?

In terms of primer/paint, is there a recommended "best practice" for painting exterior wood such that it lasts longer and doesn't crack under prolonged sun exposure?? This paint job doesn't appear to have any primer beneath which I suspect may have been the culprit here.

try a deck stripper then use a neutralizer or brightener you may be suprized how good it will come out,then i would use a high quality deck stain [sw or bm]

Those are in decent shape and a coat of paint will make them look real nice. Remove as much as you can of the previous paint on the deck and and loose paint on the door. If you can still get oil based deck enamel in your area than you wouldn't need to prime the deck. If you can't, then prime all the bare wood on both with a good oil based primer and a quality enamel paint will do just fine.

I performed a Collegeville Deck Washing project in this condition before I finished the Collegeville Deck Washing looked like this.This was after I applied Sherwin-Williams DeckScapes™Solid Latex Stain. It turned out decent.

The little razor like slits are from coating failure. Whenever you let the project get to that point you do need to scuff sand, scrape, wash it well and just use a solid stain. Its the best that can be done with a deck that has been abused like that, but it is surely not the worse I have seen or worked on.
