I have a 48 inch wide by 17 inches deep garden window and want to put granite tile on the inside. I estimate the combined weight of tile, board and cement to be 50 to 60 lb. This excludes any plants or other stuff we may put in it once it is finished. Is there a guideline as to how much weight one can put in these windows? My conrtractor says no problem, but I would like to be sure.

That seems like an awful lot of weight. Did you try calling the manufacturer?

I weighed a piece of tile, scaled it to the window area and doubled the result to account for board and cement. I have not called the window manufacturer, but will see if I can get information from them.

I suppose it depends on how well the window was installed also. Did the contractor you mentioned install the window?

It might help to have your contractor write a description of how he installed the window and what materials he used. When you call the manufacturer, you can describe what's been done.
