I have small hall and bathroom that have Wood Planks on it. I wanted to lay a 1/4 -inc sheet rock to it so it can smooth and flush you know.

However, I would like to know if there a cheaper alternative for my situation.

Thanks

Adding any layer to the planks will cause an imbalance in all your trim. Door facings will need jamb extensions, trim will need to be removed and replaced over the new covering. Really a PITA, as opposed to removing the planks and installing sheetrock.

I"ve never done it, but you may be able to skim coat the planks depending on what they look like. Can you post a few pictures so we can see what you see?

IMO laminating the wall with 1/4" drywall is the best way to go. Quicker and not as messy as tearing out the existing [unless you need to insulate or relocate electrical] As noted you'd have to rework the trim and add extensions to the electrical boxes. I would not skim coat over the wood! it is apt to fail sooner or later.
