I want to use heat tape on some of my home's PVC pipes to stop them from freezing in cold weather.

Is it acceptable to use heat tape PVC pipes and plastic piping?

Hi Kemper. The self regulating heat tapes are what you want. Traditional thermostat controlled tapes rely on that stat to say on or off. If one area of the tape is overlapped or over insulated it can get too hot and the stat doesn't know. A self regulating heat tape controls the heat it produces everywhere along the tape. If one area starts to get too warm the internal resistance between the two conductors increases reducing the heat.

Search "self regulating heat cable" and there are several options.
