When the installer came he said the speed is 100 Mbps and will increase soon to 300 Mpbs same price, and plans are for.... 1000 mbps @ $30 more (currently $50).

I openly busted out Laughing, I said I don't need 300, why would I pay more for 1000?

He kinda laughed and said he's told to tell us about it, and agreed it's silly for residential, with the exception of a very few.

The provided modem has 2 ports on it with 2 different services and different IP addresses.
He told me they set it up that way because it's easier for checking for trouble.
So they let the customer have it at no charge.
So my Son has one IP @ 300, and we have the other IP at 300... Cool.

Just got my McAfee renewal notice for $104. Best Buy has it on sale for $24 ( $70 off ) for 3 devices. Now I am going to haggle some more and see if they will price match it. Otherwise I will remove it and buy it for $24 and re-install. Crazy how much profit they make or how cheap they can sell it. Most people don't know how to shop and probably pay retail, not me.

I have been switching back and forth between Norton and McAfee for 20 years. McAfee is now owned by Intel and I have no problems removing it. No more hidden pop ups saying you need to renew etc etc and I am very in tune with that as they used to B4 Intel took them over. IMO they got so much bad publicity because of that , Intel decided it was not worth it. Times change.

AH I had it once back in the day, Never ever touched it again, Norton was good back then, but turned into bloatware huge memory sucking thing.

Norton I do not like anymore as everything is extra cost. VPN is extra etc etc. McAfee comes as a complete package with VPN and their dashboard and layout is much cleaner and easier to use IMO. I have had zero problems with them. I get zero spam and it works perfectly with gmail. My Gal uses Yahoozer and that company I will never use either. Lots of problems with spam filters etc.

VPN can be slowing down your streaming.
My streaming works really well and maybe once a week You Tube slows down or stops. Yeah it may be the VPN which occasionally drops out but it is very rare. Mostly I want it for online banking security. I also completely clear my browsing data in Google after banking . A bit annoying as I have to relog into Gmail and use the 2 step process but at least nobody can track me banking.

Just curious why you think you need McAfee, when Windows comes with its own antivirus software.

The newer Windows Defender is pretty good but if you read which Anti-virus products are best reviews there are better ones like McAfee and Bit Defender out there. I like their VPN and for my phone also.

Some fiber, mine does, gives far better upload speeds than copper. I have 500 up & 500 down. Not sure I really need that much but that was the package.

Unless you run more than a couple of devices at the same time none of us really need that speed.

New company ran the fiber "to your house". Often there is an ONT involved (optical network terminal). This is termination point for incoming fiber. From that location, fiber can be continued or legacy cable like COAX can be used to bring signal to customer's preferred hub point. Think of the ONT as the modem. (You won't need your old one.) ONT should have Ethernet ports for expansion to connect a router. Most current routers will not slow down anything. Connecting a switch to router lets hardwire ethernet to various devices be installed. So router is most often placed where wifi works best and where hardwire ethernet runs can originate.

If your ONT will be mounted outdoors, it is likely that your legacy COAX runs are there also. It is an easier install to convert from fiber to existing COAX runs at that point. If ONT will be installed indoors, the connection to pre-existing COAX hub will take place there. Common to use MOCAs.

These allow the ONT to use an ethernet port (out) to feed a MoCA adapter with further output to COAX cable. At the other end of the COAX the adapter is reversed to bring COAX back to ethernet, to hard connect a computer or other device.

A purist would wire 100% fiber (and not use pre-existing COAX) to use points.

Fiber is a huge improvement over copper.

With the speeds you state, you can add services such as Netflix, HBO etc as well as Voip phone service and cable substitutes such as Sling and others.

Interesting and Thanx for the info. There is a LOT of terminology and tech involved which few people like Joe Public ( me ) understand. My neighbor got the same system and there is some exotic looking box with lights etc mounted on her inside wall so I suspect that is where the fiber cable from outside attaches to. She does not have one outside.

Glad to hear everyone thinks fiber is better regardless of the posted speeds. Shaw is being taken over by Rogers and I am not a fan of them for reasons I won't get into. Pretty soon there will 2 companies in Canada for ISPs and they could have a take it or leave it attitude /monopoly if they don't want to compete against each other and then share the same jacked up pricing.

I like Shaw and would stay with them but once they become Rogers then it may be a whole new ball of wax and Shaw the good nice company may be history.

Installing McAfee or Norton is like pouring concrete into your Computer.
Funny thing is :
The most infested computers I get here in my Lab have either McAfee or Norton installed.
Those with the (free) version of Malwarebytes are clean.
Go figure.

Here is some example of the speed we get around here:

Got the fiber hooked up and it does seem faster to load especially as ads on this page slow it down. With copper they were really slowing it down so there must be a difference regardless of the rated speed.

speed is a funny, relative thing. If this is too much tech talk, cover your ears :D
What we perceive as "slow downs" or "flakey" connections is often down to a DNS (Domain Name Service) failure.
The Provider has a DNS server that takes the things that you type and converts it to a set of numbers. The real web pages are located at IP addresses which are numbers.
When your DNS server is down, then your request for that info goes to a secondary server. It adds layers of complexity to your simple " hey give me this page dangit". On a bad day it will time out.
Sometimes you can keep going on a bad DNS day by setting your DNS servers to one of the root servers.
Those root servers are located at large data centers and universities. The origins of the internet trace back to places like USC and the DOD, and they still host the root DNS.
If you are having one of those bad days you can use a root server like google's 8.8.8.8
And BINGO! the pages start loading again. If it is really a crapped out switch or route, that won't help but when it does it is very cool.

Not that I am complaining about the ads here as they are necessary but with the copper I could not scroll thru replies AND have the ads loading at the same time. Ads kept loading and scrolling stopped. Now I can scroll at the same time as the ads load so the fiber is definitely better IMO.

Only drawback is I lost the Alexa voice search function Shaw had on their remote and I miss her. Have to do the old school search.

Agree with owner of the Songbird.
Steve Gibson offers a free utility that helps fine tune DNS servers for your location.
It's interesting to run the program even if you choose not to make changes to your network.
DNS primary and secondary servers are user changeable in router settings. Write down your default server addresses before changing them.

Hope works up north!
