using amp meter to measure some current, talking to my wife on the walkie talkie. when i hit transmit the screen on the meter went haywire, showing different lines, etc making no sense changing rapidly. i turned off the walkie and then reset the amp meter. meter was good. did it again w/ same results (duh).

moved back some and meter seemed unaffected.

1. did i damage the meter? if so how would i know?
2. why / how did this happen? (clearly some interference - trying to understand what part of each device played a factor in this.
3. how far back from the meter do i need to be not to cause any harm?

thanks!

That's called RFI, radio frequency interference, and at close range it's unavoidable. It was the bane of amateur radio operators years ago but it was finally adjudicated to prove that the hams weren't the problem it was because the device being interfered with had insufficient shielding from what was legal radio signals.

Modern devices are required to comply with FCC regulations that specify the protection level they are required to have for both radiating interference and shielding from it.

But when you get in such close proximity as you are doing, you're going to get the problem. It didn't likely hurt your ammeter but don't risk it if you can avoid it.

Best regards, amateur radio operator WA6DRB
