I moved to New Zealand not long ago and was impressed at the lack of insulation in the houses!....So I started looking for a simple way of sorting this problem and found out about thermal roller blinds which totally made the job of keeping me warm in winter (http://www.homevisionblinds.co.nz/roller-blinds/)
For those who fear the sun more, the thermal roller blinds block the sun too and keep the house cool.

Thermal shades do work. Sometimes they work too well and will limit the room side heat from getting to the glass and getting it above dew point.

After that, you can wind up with mass condensation and other issues if you aren't careful. Be sure to check behind them in the heating season and make sure that isn't happening.
