I plan on installing either 4 inch ic or 4 inch airtite ic cans in new construction. I am planning to use spray foam to do a flash and cellulose type insulation in the attic to achieve an r-80 insulation. There is no problem with room to achieve this, and I will use mini spirals in the can as I have done in the past without problem. Is there any reason I could not safely spray the cans to get a complete seal.

Foam & cans

I just went through the same thing. You won't get the light manufacturers to allow you to foam the lights. They are worried about the thermals tripping. They don't seem to have a problem with cellulose (or whatever) in any amount top of them.
So what I did was to cover the cans with paper grocery bags. Shoot the foam. (I only put in an inch or two of foam, SIPS house) Remove the bags. And put in the cellulose. I only went for R 50 or R55.

Which Mfg's?
Do you have a link to where they state this?
I'm looking at Halo's site & I don't see anything limiting the type of insulation

There is nothing exempting it in the box or on the box
No instructions stating it can't be used
Nothing on the can indicating it can't be used

If their online specifications do not exempt it & nothing in or on the box or fixture, then the info is bogus

If there is an exemption from use they would need to include that with the merchandise being sold
