I recently had a 12 x 40 wood built portable building built for an art studio. It's peer and beam with a shingled roof. There is a gable vent on either end. It is a low pitched roof. I'd like to leave it open up to the roof of at all possible. Vents on either end obviously let in a lot of air. Picture attached. Ideas for insulating ceiling? Do I need to? Space will be heated in winter with a 1000sq ft space heater and portable air conditioner in summer.

Did you insulate the floor joists? That is important, too. If you choose to leave the roof rafters exposed, about the only good insulation you can use would be spray in polyisocyanurate, but that is usually professionally installed. Insulating the roof won't give you the warmth/cool that you need over installing a ceiling and having insulation on top of the ceiling material, creating an air space between it and the hot/cold roof.
