Installing the electrical hookup for gas fireplace

We're needing to install the electrical box in an old brick fireplace. We've seen a lot about using the ash dump area for this, but the pit under our firebox that's the ash dump has a cast iron door leading to the outside. Is that a problem? And does this mean any wiring we install in our ash dump area has to meet exterior wiring requirements?
