We are going to install a front and a back door, we have never done this before. Is it a easy job? Anyone know of a good site with instructions on how to do it. We ordered the doors so they are the same size door as what we are taking out, Any suggestions would be great.....:huh:

Are the new one's Prehung or Slabs? The answer will depend on which type they are.:yes: bill

Did you order the correct jamb width? People always assume they're all the same.
Installing doors, whether slab or prehung, takes a bit of finesse. Walls aren't plumb, the floors aren't level, etc.
I'd start with the back door first as a way to experience the procedure. I'm sure a goggle search on hanging doors will pull up something useful.

Or a youtube search which is always golden as well. This is not as easy as it appears on HGTV and there are many variables to take into account.

ok I am assuming they are pre hung, they are in the jam???Hope thats right. We had windows done recently and i know the carpenter used some special plastic that is code? does this apply to doors.....Im so lost lol

You really need to know what you have. If that's an issue, you had better call someone in to install them.
How did you even order these if you didn't know what you needed?

Google is your friend; there are plenty of videos and instructions on the web.

Just realize they make it look much easier then it actually is; especially if you have never done it before. Also, as this is your first time don't expect to do both the same day.

Why didn't you start with something much easier like open heart surgery?

Are the units cased one side?
What size is the existing casing?
Is the house brick?
If not brick - What type of siding does it have?
Are the exterior walls 2X4 or 2X6?
Are the interior walls plaster or drywall?
Do you have a mite box or a power mitre saw?
Do you have plenty of shims?
Do you really need doors at all?

Do you have a Yellow Pages handy?

Mookie,
Congratulations on jumping into such an adventure. Since these are both Exterior Doors I would not think they are prehung so you will have a lot of steps, including

• Trimming the door to size
• Mortising the hinges
• Beveling the strike edge
• Drilling for the lockset

If you think you will not have to do any trimming then first very precisely measure the existing Back door width (in 3 places) and height (at each side) to see how much has to be trimmed from the new back door.

If you do not have the skills or tools to do the above steps, then call a trim carpenter to hang the door. If you are going ahead with the project, then start with the Back Door and finish it before starting on the front.

Ok, alittle more information. First, these doors are at our sons house, our house is almost finished completely, and our son cant afford a carpenter right now, so dad and son are going to attempt it. And yes he needed doors as the others barely closed, the back door you had to dead bolt to even shut. He had a friend who built a house come and help him measure what he needed for doors. Then he went in to home depot and gave them all the measurements, and went from there. The doors are metal doors so no trimming I hope? Already hung in the frame, and door knob holes drilled etc. But I will take some pictures and post lol, of the task at hand while its being done. Hubby and son shingled his roof, a month or so ago and they did a awesome job, so I am sure this will go good I hope.

Thanks for the update. Since the new doors are pre-hung the job should be much easier depending of course of how good a job the original Framers did on the rough openings.

Still start on the back door and finish that before the front door.
