I am new on here and looking for some info,
I am replacing a roof that is only 9 years old that has been a victim of wind damage , shingles blowing off , i have on there now the 3 tabs ,
I have a couple of roofers that has looked at the roof and have one estimate in hand ,
the estimate i have is using the owens corning oakridge 30 year shingles ...
Im thinking to myself wouldn't it be a wise investment to upgrade to the duration shingles ?
The other roofer which hasn't laid me a estimate in hand yet ,is trying to sell me on the certainteed landmark 30 year shingles ,
From my research on the computer here ,to me it apperars the Owens Corning Duration is the way to go ............
Ok now ,,does anyone on here have any other opion good or bad ,
One other issue is that i feel like i need more ATTIC VENTALATION .
Only one roofer mention using the Ridge vent , My house is 2000 sq foot
I have only 2 of those big round vents on the house now ,,not motorized ,
The issue now , i have read that RIDGE VENTS don't work ,,
should i scrap the ideal of ridgevents and get 2 more big round vents ,
or should I take the 2 big vents out and replace them with power vents ?

i would like to stay within the $80 to $85 a sq on the shingles .Thats what the duration is compared to $75 for the oakridge and $70 for the certainteed landmark

1'st off, don't stop looking for a roofer at just two estimates, should always get at least 3, more is better.

2'nd, be aware that the majority of the time home owners experience wind damage issues with their roofs, '3-tabs or not' the problem is poor workmanship related.
If the roofer you choose this time doe's not install the new laminate shingles properly, they very may blow off also.

3'rd, there's 3 steps to proper ventilation 'Intake - Air Flow - Exhaust' and your roofer needs to be able to address all 3 steps.

4'th, A good roof system poorly installed will not last, make sure you find the right roofing contractor first, than find the right shingle.

Balanced Intake And Exhaust Ventilation are the key to the longevity of the life of the roof, in addition to the proper workmanship.

All ridge vents are not equal. I only use the style that has the External Baffle, such as the Shingle Vent II Ridge Vent, manufactured by Air Vent Corporation.

Where the heck did you read that ridge vents do not work?

Every home needs to be looked and and specified for it's individual conditions, but if your home is a gable style, then typically a good brand of Ridge Vent will provide the correct exhaust. You also need the same amount or more of Intake Ventilation too though.

No comment regarding preferance about the Oakridge 30 versus the Duration 30. They both are similar enough to not make too much of a difference. The only difference I know of is the wider tack sealant strip running continuously and a wider nailing area. That just makes it easier for an inexperienced roofer to follow the specs, but the Jury is still out regarding trapping moisture behind the full length continuous sealant strip.

Installing a new roof update

Its been a couple of days and i have tried to get more of a peacefull feeling about getting this roofing project underway ,thanks for the help and comments on here ,
a few things after talking to a local roofer that i will run over with you guys ,
I have decided to go with the oakridge 30 year shingles
i have decided to add 2 more 24 inch muffin vents on the roof ,
which will be a total of 4 all together ,rember the house is 2000 sq ft,
i have a cathederal ceiling in my dining room so going to install 8 ft of ridge vent over the top of that room ,

Ventilation requirements are based on the sq. footage of attic space,not sq. footage of house.Whats a muffin vent?I think it would look funny with just on piece of ridgevent.Why not run it continuously?

Is anybody out there aware that even if you nail certainteed too high & miss your nail zone they will still give the wind warranty .
Why? They have an exceptional adhesive. So does Gaf /Elk Timberline. Not sure if Gaf/Elk is the same everywhere. Ours comes out of the old Elk Shafter plant.
We were installing it in the middle of winter the day before we got 100 mile per hr winds. (40 year) on a hillside facing the wind. Lost a whole building (to a tree) but not a single shingle blew off. It was a townhoue complex & we were on 5 buildings.
I was sold.

Ridgevent?
Air goes in soffits & goes out the top.
Every 3 ft is equivilant to 1 -75 sq inch vent
60 ft = 20 vents.
