Hi All

I am building/finishing my basement and moving towards the drywall phase. I noticed in some videos and images, that the ceiling had straps/furrings.

Do i need these? i am not sure.

my basement joists are 12" apart. i was originally planning to screw the drywall into the joist.

thanx in advance

Pull some brick string tight across the ceiling in several places to see how flat it is, then check the other direction to see how much it's sagged in the middle.

sorry, i have been away, thank you for the comments. i am going to lay the drywall on the joist, i figured with screws every 12in (span between joists), it will be quite secure and if it cracks... its okay, i will consider it a scar of hard work! :)

I would strongly recommend not going to your floor joists. Unevenness on 12" centres will be hard to hide. Ask for sound bar, installed with drywall screws the opposite way of the joists (across them)

It helps even out ceilings and will stop vibrations coming through your ceiling.

Install them on 16" centres and screw the drywall to them. Designed to hang down from your joists so vibrations upstairs isn't transferred
