I own an old house and the tenants have asked me to install a new light fixture. All the tutorials I've found assume there was previously a full light fixture, but here there is simply a wire hanging down from the ceiling. The box looks ready to go for a switch. But what do I do with that wire - can I just strip it and separate one side from the other to get negative and positive?

Disclaimer: I realize I am ignorant on this topic and that electricity is dangerous. I'm just trying to gain more understanding, and after some effort if I still feel unqualified I will call a professional.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but the wire looks like it is romex. I'm not sure if I see a junction box in the ceiling. If there isn't one, then one will need to be installed.

The first thing you need to do is install box to mount the fixture. I would install a fan rated box to allow for future possible fan install.
