I am putting a 2'6" x 6'6" peninsula in my finished basement as a way to divide the space (between family/TV room and playroom) and to provide a place that's not the couch to have snacks, etc... It can also double as a "bar" for the adults as it will have a good view of the TV for Sunday football. I thought about trying to find a granite remnant but from what I've seen they're still way too expensive. I'd like something around $8-10 a square foot. Any suggestions?

Do you have any pre-fabricated granite suppliers in your area? Pre-made counter pieces, island, peninsulas, etc. They can modify a stock pre-fab piece to fit your need cheaper than finding a remnant and having it fabricated. Or even cheaper, build to fit an available pre-fab piece.

You could always do tile. Not my favorite, but cheap and better than formica.

Another option would be wood. With tons of coats of polyurethane, it would also be resonably durable.

You might find a store in your area that deals with donations. In Atlanta there is a Habitat for Humanity store that accepts donations of overstock and nice used home goods.

I'd try the granite places again. No two slabs are identical, so when there are smaller pieces left over from a job that aren't enough to do a full kitchen, they're sold at a much lower price because they don't match any other slab.

Our kitchen doesn't have a large amount of counter space, so we were actually able to do the whole thing with another job's leftovers. We saved a bundle.

Get a old solid wood door, and put some legs on it, or if wanting a actual bar, make it so that you can roll it out of the way, when not in use. It really depends on what you want it to do. For a table, a old door works. For a bar, may be cheaper to build a nice one that fits in, with the ability to roll away, or push up against the wall when not in use.
