Im adding rafter and collar ties. Vertical rafter supports. gable end supports. Hurricane straps.

Then I will hire someone to remove old shingle roof. Secure planking with 8D ring shank nails. Might use peel and stick. Then Id like a metal roof, although I might go shingle.

I dont have a lot of money, but i do want the strongest roof possible. I want my home to withstand the next big one that comes thru.

Is metal really that much stronger and longer lasting then shingles?

What is the best strongest type metal roof? Ive interviewed many contractors and each has a different opinion. The contractor im considering now says any roof all bets are off with wind over 80 miles per hour. Still metal is way better then shingles and that all that I need is galvalume with exposed fasteners. That standing seam is way more expensive and no better. That the exposed screws will never leak. Im doubtful.

We get some pretty high winds here in Nebraska, especially when a tornado passes. I have been using the Malarkey Legacy for several years, using the six nail fastening method and have never seen one shingle move, even with gusts over 100 mph. The GAF Grand Sequoia is another excellent performer. Properly applied, these are warrantied to withstand up to 130 mph winds.

I agree with your contractor about all bets being off with hurricane winds, no roof will withstand that, i've seen all types flying through the air when that happens, asphalt,steel,tile and just about anything else that's used for roofing, this is what i had put on my house.

A tornado is smaller, more focused, and moves faster.
There are few homes or roofs which can hold up to a Category 4 hurricane. I doubt any could handle a Category 5. But, few hurricanes strike at that level.
Prepare the very best you can, buy insurance, get right with God, and relax.

your roofer is going to recommend the metal roof he is comfortable with. i do the ones that you install 7 screws across every 2', suppose to be rated at 120 + winds. there rated for updraft.
