I would appreciate any guidance on this please.
I just changed out a dimmer switch to a regular "illuminated" switch. When I turn the switch "on", the light in the switch goes off, and the overhead lights go on. That is the way it is suppose to work anyway.

Here is my problem, I can not keep the illuminated switch to stay on when I put pressure on it...i.e. screwing the switch in to the box. When I do, the "illumination" goes out. Otherwise, the switch works fine. The overhead lights work, no problems. If this switch were not "illuminated", there would be no problem. I know the "illuminated" switch is only active when the wall switch itself is turned off. If I loosen the screws on the switch to the box, the light comes back on. When I tighten the screws, it goes off.

Any ideas ? I was thinking either a short or a defective switch (?) I took it apart 3 times, and made sure all the wiring looked okay.

Thanks in advance,

I say that the switch itself is defective.

An illuminated switch has just the same two terminals that you connect up the wires to the light or other device being controlled by the switch. If those connections were loose then the device being controlled would not work.
