Over the summer, lightning struck my house/near my house and fried the circuit board for my ac/heating unit. My dad came and replaced the circuit board and thermostat and got the air conditioning working, as it was extremely hot during that time. Now that winter has rolled around, turns out that the gas heater does not work.

I had a repair man come out to look at it and he said that the circuit board was not sending enough amperage to click the gas valve on. He wanted to charge me $900 for a new board or 5,000 for an entire new system. Being a mother of 3, I didn't have those kind of funds, so decided to do it myself.

I labeled the wires, and took the board back to the commercial dealer where it was purchased and got a new one. I re-installed it, taking care to mind for no static.

I am still having issues with it. The AC works fine with no issues. The heater tries to turn on...one out of 3 burners turn on. The system tries 3 times to fire up, before it confirms ignition lock out. The other burners never light, the blower never comes on. I have rechecked the schematics, I have checked the connections, I have also cleaned the flame sensor.

I need ideas where to go from here. I don't have my dad, the heating and ac king, anymore to help.

The unit is less than 4 years old.

I am very sorry for your loss. Losing a parent really brings home the awareness of ones mortality. Hopefully, we can help fill in for your awesome Dad.

I really hate it when somebody tries to rip off someone like you. I am sure that Yuri and Doc will be along soon, and they really know their stuff, but in the meantime, post your exact Make, model number and serial number, because they will need those.

It sounds like a bad 24 volt transformer to me which is not sending enough juice to properly open the gas valve, These are quite inexpensive, and yours might have been fried in the strike.

Go private and I will tell you where to get one, but in the meantime post the requested info.

All the burners have to light and if the first one is starting then the problem is the last one is not igniting where the flame sensor is. Call a different company.

Couldn't this be either the transformer, or the main solenoid on the gas valve? Sounds like she is getting Pilot gas, but not main burner gas. If that main solenoid does not open the mains gas valve the flame sensor will never see flame, because it is on the opposite side on the far left burner. Lockout after three tries.

At any rate her furnace is only 4 years old and replacement is ludicrous. So is 900 bucks for an 80 dollar board.

1. One burner is lighting and without measurements the gas valve is opening.
2. Carrier doesn't sell any parts for only $80 especially proprietary parts.....then a contractor has to drive at $3 per gallon...stand in line paying a wage....and then the part is probably warranty after only 4 years and that takes another trip at $3 per gallon and standing in line to get your warranty credit...

Board

You are of course correct about the board. I put an aftermarket ICM board in my furnace which was an exact copy of the carrier board. It cost 74 dollars. The carrier board was I think $220 I could be off on that one. I dont understand the wait in line, but I believe you. So to your way of thinking $900 dollars is reasonable? Maybe it is. What is the going rate per hour for a certified HVAC technician? Sounds like a decent career move for a young man. (Which I, unfortunately, am not)

By the way, 3 bucks per gallon is cheap where I live

The $3 is what it is today...not what it has been.

Good chance the cross overs are dirty. And the burners need pulled and cleaned.
