ideal placement of exterior light

Hi all, was not sure where to ask this question, but electrical seems the most logical---

I'm going to be installing a inswing patio door where there is currently a window. I am going to install sconce-type light on one side of the door. What is the ideal height of the light? what is the idea distance from the door Are there any suggestions or is it just "whatever looks good"?

Thanks!

You got it.
A light next to a door looks nice until you turn it on and it attacts all the bugs right where the door opens.
At least install it on the hindge side.
Make sure to install it where it's easy to get to the bulb without a ladder.
I put mine about eye level, and around a foot away from the frame. You may want to check with your inspector to be sure there is not a requirement to be followed.

Thanks! I'm not sure installing it on the hinge side will "look best" though. But you make a good point about bugs!
I usually place them 12" down and 12" over to center of box from the top of door. It also depends on the fixture.
I moved in to a house that had an exterior light at eye level. I hate it because it blinds me. I'd much rather have it 7-8ft off the ground, but that's just me.
