Hi

Currently building my new home and approaching first fix of electrical and plumbing.

I have a larger open plan living room and kitchen approx 11m in width and 7.5m in depth.

What is an ideal distance between the ceiling spotlights (GU10s) and how far ideally should the start away from the wall?

I attach an image here of the section of the ground floor in question. The blue dots are the spotlights and the coloured zones are the different circuits.

Its actually not allowing me to post a link to my photobucket page and says that I need one post to post a link which is annoying.

Thats even though I have posted a new post as a newbie. Will try again during the day.

Many factors determine the spacing including the beam spread , mounting height , work surface height , desired level of lighting and type of lighting.

Kitchens require a higher foot-candle than a living room.

As a startingguideline the distance of the light nearest the wall to the wall should be half the distance from the light to the next light.

In other words, divide up the ceiling into equal sized rectangles and put a light in the middle of each rectangle.

Exception for counters such as in a kitchen: Suggest having the row of lights directly over the edge of the counter or slightly closer to the wall behind. The exact position will depend on how much illumination of the cabinet interior you want when you open the doors, although most folks consider that a waste of light.

There is a maximum recommended spacing that translates into the size of the rectangles you will need to imagine or draw onto your diagram. That varies from one fixture to another; you will have to look that up or inquire of the manufacturer.

You might try taping little black circles to the ceiling and then move them about to see what looks better if you have an irregularly shaped space.
