How to remove this window easily

419 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Skoorb
I need to remove this window from its frame to fit something into the basement which will not fit in with the window there. I had them put in a massive window with a larger opening than the basement door, but sadly it doesn't hinge from the side so the window really needs out temporarily.

Do I really have to unscrew all these screws as it certainly looks like, both top and bottom, or is there some clever quick release or similar? It's a new window for what it's worth!

Thanks!

Yes , that is the modern , standardized operator & hardware .

You should use :

1. Spray silicone for the plastic parts

2. Oil (3in1 , motor oil , whatever) for the metal parts .

3. A fairly large straight edge screwdriver .

On the bottom of the sash , there should be a plastic piece that that slides in a rail . Spray the piece with silicone & gently pry the arm off (downwards)

There are 2 control arms (top& bottom) & a pivot arm (on the bottom corner of the sash) that have snap connections . Oil them & pry the arm off the post......HOWEVER , This requires a little finesse . You should wiggle the sash while prying each arm or you can pull the post off !:vs_whistle: .

Now you slide it out of the hinge guide

It may be a good idea to have someone hold the sash while you un hook it...…...

  1. Have a helper around to support the sash - it looks like it is decent sized
  2. Pictured by the green arrow - use a flat blade screw driver to "unclip" the retainer clip that holds the hardware unto the underside of the sash. It should pull right off once unclipped.
  3. Use a flat blade screw driver to pop up the arms - pictured in the green circles and be sure to have a hold on the sash
  4. Slide the sash off the tracks and set to the side

Thanks, guys. Not smart enough to figure it out but smart enough to know there may have been a better approach than complete window disassembly. Glad I asked :)
All done. The idea of oil was a good one, everything popped right out.

Couch is now in basement, window back in place :)
