Your question definitely is too general for anyone here to be of any assistance. Kind of like asking "how long is a rope".
As Ron accurately stated, you absolutely must hire a structural engineer to design a way to retrofit the beam with more material. Welds must also be inspected to the engineer's satisfaction.
There are dozens of variables in play here...All of which must be part of the calculation.

Because your husband(probably) doesn't have the qualifications to figure this out. I'm not saying he's stupid, but that would be the case if he removed the post.
The replacement structure would depend on the loads involved over this area. I have 2, 10" steel "I" beams, 6' apart in my basement and still have steel columns every 8 '.
Hopefully you have a ranch so when it collapses, body recovery won't take too long.

Oh good lord. Cancel or postpone the steel order.
Just because it is steel and the rest of the house is wood does not mean that the steel that he "specified" is plenty strong to do what he proposes. Furthermore, removal of the center post(s) adds considerable load to the outer bearing points, and they may not have the footings for it.
I've been in dozens of homes where people have tried major structural modifications on a DIY/wing-it basis and failed miserably...Either during the project or in the following months.
All I can tell you is that you can do this as a DIY job, sure you can. You just need some professional guidance from an engineer to calc the loads.
I sure hope he's pulling a permit. :whistling2:
