I'm painting a fiberglass door with latex primer and painter. The door is all smooth with a couple of recessed panels. All was going great until I was putting the first coat of paint on one of the panels. It was drying so fast that the roller picked up a spot about 2" x 3". I panicked and tried to wipe the entire panel clean. Well, that didn't work so well and I ended up with a spot about 4" x 24" that had no paint. I tried to hand sand the edges, and then I put a coat of paint over all of it. Then of course I tried a second coat of paint! As you can tell, I'm a beginner!. The streaks of the raised edges look bad. I've looked at stripping just the panel, but the rest of the door is perfect and I don't want to mess it up. I've read that you can't sand latex. If there was a way to sand it, that would be best. Any advice? Just live with it?

Well, the problem with sanding at this point is that it's going to be really, really difficult to sand off the panel without doing damage to the underlying fiberglas. You could try some Goof-Off remover, but, again, you have to be careful not to damage the fiberglas or spill some on other parts of the door that are ok. You may want to try a palm sander with 60 or 80 grit sandpaper just to see if the more aggressive approach helps. The sandpaper will likely "gum up" but it's worth a shot. Then clean the panel to remove any dust or remnants of the Goof-off and try to repaint it. Sure beats doing the whole door over.

Have you tried spraying PAM on your sandpaper?

Spraying oil on the sandpaper lubricates it and prevents it from heating up. When latex heats up, it is like trying to sand a half-chewed gummy bear. That's the theory anyway. I dunno. I've never actually tried it. I was just throwing it out there tongue-in-cheek.
