How to pick a wood stain?

So I'm Refinishing my original hardwood floors in my 1950's California house. I think It's red oak but I don't know the diff. between White and Red oak. Its 2 1/4" wide by 1/2" thick. I got it sanded and ready to stain, but I'm wondering if I test stain in a few areas how easy It would be to cover over it. This is a living room. There is no closet to test in. Nor is there really good hidden place to try it. I see some have done this.

If I try that how to I go about getting rid of the stain I don't want? Does the stain go deep? Is sanding it again the only way? what grit? I currently have MINWAX Red Mahogany 225 picked out, but I'm not sure how it would look in a whole room. Anyone have some pics of stained red oak? Thanks JIM

If you've still got the sander on site, go ahead & stain anywhere to pic a color, then run the sander back over the stained area with whatever final grit you sanded. If you don't still have the sander, you can use a belt sander with the same final grit paper. Don't sand smoother than the rest of the floor or it could potentially not stain the same as the rest. The stain is not going to go very deep at all.

One other thing, be sure to sand past & feather your sanding out so as not to create a noticable dip.
