How to pick a wood stain?

So I'm Refinishing my original hardwood floors in my 1950's California house. I think It's red oak but I don't know the diff. between White and Red oak. Its 2 1/4" wide by 1/2" thick. I got it sanded and ready to stain, but I'm wondering if I test stain in a few areas how easy It would be to cover over it. This is a living room. There is no closet to test in. Nor is there really good hidden place to try it. I see some have done this.

If I try that how to I go about getting rid of the stain I don't want? Does the stain go deep? Is sanding it again the only way? what grit? I currently have MINWAX Red Mahogany 225 picked out, but I'm not sure how it would look in a whole room. Anyone have some pics of stained red oak? Thanks JIM

I don't still have the rental sander on site, but I do have a hand belt sander and a small corner cat (vibrating sander). I thought the stain went deep and was worried it would take a lot of material and feathering to get back to normal. Thanks JIM
