I have a project in mind that might require S4S Douglas Fir #2 timbers and posts, but I'd like to get sort of a "rough" look. It doesn't need to be like rough sawn, just not so smooth.

I was thinking maybe a belt sander with some 60 grit.

Got any other ideas?

36 grit sand paper would do it.

Sand across grain just a little on the Bias and maybe they'll look something like they were sawed with a Pit Saw.

To add to the sanding you could beat them with a length of chain.

Some one has a machine, we get wood for fascia that has been roughed up and primed and it was regular lumber before they roughed it up.
