I'm re-purposing some kitchen cabinets to create a kitchen island.

I've removed several layers of 20-25 year old Contact-type shelf paper (heat gun and scraper), but there is a lot of really sticky residue left.

I want to paint the shelves but I need to get rid of that sticky residue. I tried the Goo adhesive remover stuff, but that wasn't very effective.

Any suggestions?

Maybe some engine bay degreaser from your auto store.
Or a citrus degreaser from home Depot etc

Acetone should cut it.
Lots of rags and open the windows when using.
For a 100% sure way to get the paint to stay stuck I'd be stripping back to bare wood.

Actually the shelf paper was stuck to the bare plywood shelves. They're nice clean (except for the residue) 5/8" plywood. I think the shelf paper kept the wood in very good shape overall.

My plan is to remove the residue, fill some minor nicks, sand, prime and then paint.

Am I missing anything?

If it's just the shelves I'd prime and use gloss enamel paint.
It's a far harder paint, easy to clean.

WD-40 removes a lot of sticky residues.

So will Ammonia cleaner.

I do not know if either will cause paint to not adhere to the wood after use though.

Paint stripper, solvent base, make sure it needs no washing/de-chemical? and do it outside. Use metal wide scraper. Oil base primer, sand, oil base gloss. Let dry at least a week. Cost of material and time may offset buying mellamine boards and edging it yourself. Ask at the store to be cut. Homedepot does acceptable job of cutting parallel boards. Should accept 1/8" difference.:smile: Mellamine boards aren't good for spanning over 24" or so.
