At our old home, we installed a new furnace and a new roof. This meant the old chimney through the middle of the house was no longer needed. We (I) installed a dropping staircase in the ceiling to access the attic, and we removed the chimney to below floor level. (The rest was too integrated in the rooms below to mess with) Then, throughout that summer, I went around on junk days and collected ANY 2" X *whatever*" I could find. Water bed frames were a big help, but any scraps of 2x4s or 2x6s or whatever got picked up and screwed down to the floor up there. (All butted ends screwed down tight) I ended up with a very thick, strong 12' X 30' floor by the end of the summer and then found some used carpet that was in excellent shape...... but it was 2 different colors and neither was big enough to do the whole job. Solution? I cut it all up into 2' squares and just glued it right to the flooring with PL construction adhesive. (Go ahead and laugh, we were new at that kind of stuff and flat broke at the time, unlike now, when we're just poor.) The 'checkerboard' look was nice! The wife liked it and it's still up there as far as I know. I added windows at each end and threw up some paneling and it's being used as an extra bedroom still. I even built in a desk area at the front end with scraps for a homework area.

This is just a thread to show how using a little ingenuity can save you big $$$. The only thing that cost us was the screws and glue! ....Ok, and the staircase too I guess.... but I got that for $40.00, so it wasn't too bad.

Just having fun with you. Sounds like a good job. I try reusing materials if I have them on hand. I never trash anything usable and if I can repair a frayed cord or glue r weld it back together thats great.

I did stay at Holiday Inn Express last night.
