I purchased a used coffee table that I'm looking to refinish. I want to get a really dark close to black stain on it. I sanded a small spot at the underside until I hit the bare wood. I applied a regular oil based stain from Minwax that's as black as I could find and It's no where close to the finish I'm looking for. I tried leaving the stain on for a longer period of time with no luck. I'm not sure what type of wood it is but it appears to be real hardwood and it was stained a dark walnut color originally. Is there a different product I need to be looking into? How do furniture manufacturers get that really dark finish that's so common these days?

Find a different brand of stain and try that.

Did you mix the minwax well, sometimes the pigments settle if it sat in the store a while.

Try a propane torch to "TOAST" the bare wood after sanding before finishing with a walnut stain.

That's just a suggestion, not a must do.

Very dark furniture grade finishes like your looking for are generally done by toning. Spraying a dye stain, or toned lacquer
on the wood. Your not going to get there using a thin, penetrating stain like Minwax.

You could get closer with a thicker, richer stain like Old Masters.

Stain can be applied in several coats to make it darker. Follow the directions on the can and apply 2 or 3 coats and see what it looks like.
