I have double hung windows I inherited from previous owner of my house. I found the word SCHUCO written on one of the latches. I assume this is the brand. It seems like the company makes windows. I'm trying to put on new windows similar to our other windows in an area where previously no windows are installed. The problem is, I can't seem to find the U-Factor of my existing windows.

My existing windows has this kind of label attached on them.

I went to NFRC.ORG website, but I can't seem to find the manufacturer. When I tried searching by the CPD code, sch-1-01801-m, it doesn't come up with anything. Googling that number doesn't result in anything as well.

Does anyone know how to find the U-factor of my existing windows?

Most builders will put in pretty cheap windows. Unless the home was custom built and the owner specified the windows, you really don't want the same U-factor as the old windows. Look for same style of window and lowest U-factor that you can afford.

You didn't say how old the current windows are but a new window bought today will probably be an automatic upgrade. But upgrades have moved slowly so it won't be a big difference. Look for double pane, argon filled and match the style and size.

Often the name of the mfg is noted in very small letters in one of the bottom corners if that helps. I would guess your U-Factor is about 0.50 but no better than 0.35.

If you live in a cold climate, triple pane will typically get you a somewhat better U-value, but much better condensation resistance.

I'm in the process of adding an addition on my son's house. The inspector rejected the first set of windows because the U factor wasn't low enough. That was a tough pill to swallow even though it wasn't my money. Something to keep in mind if this work is to be permitted/inspected.


If I remember correctly the first set of windows were 4.1 and local code requires 3.5 or lower. The new windows we got are 3.0
