Hi everyone:

While I'm doing research on a new furnace, I have no central A/C. For that reason, I pulled out an old air conditioner to use in my window. However, that window A/C unit is filthy inside. I don't think I ever cleaned it after about 8 to 10 years of use.

A couple of years ago, a nearby appliance shop told me that one is supposed to "shampoo" a window A/C to get it clean. Someone else told me to use a steam cleaner.

What is the proper way to get a window A/C unit clean inside, and is it something I can do without much of a learning curve?

One thing I was wondering about..I have a fairly high temp. steam cleaner. Is it wise to use that, along with whateve shampoo or cleaning chemicals?

Which parts are safe to wash/shampoo/whatever and which are not?

Thanks in advance.

I slip the guts out of the case and blow it out with compressed air.

compressed air won't do it - need water to backwash coils.

electrical pasts like motor, controls must be protected.

those cleaners can corrode the coil and cause leaks if not completely rinsed out.

just remove the surface dust/dirt and backwash with low pressure water - garden hose with no nozzle works. high pressure water tends to damage fins.
