How can I get a simple modernpainted wall surround on a fireplace, like this:

Normal drywall is combustible and not heat resistant - fireplace says use Durock. (others say Hardibacker)

- Durock company says product can't be painted, will micro-crack, and can't exceed 200F.

- How/what goes on the wall around a fireplace to allow paint/prime/texture to look like drywall?

- What treatment or method is used on the inside cut/rough edges around the fireplace to not look trashy?

Thanks

I don't recall painting any houses with painted drywall right to the firebox but I've painted a slew of them that had 1 row of tile around the box and the rest was like your pic. The tile was over drywall although I suspect there was a small gap between it and the metal box.

You can use Durock as per USG's Veneer Plaster Finish Applications.
Than you must use Diamond Brand Veneer BASECOAT ( make sure it states BASE COAT ) than when set but still damp apply USG Diamond Finish & trowel smooth or texture as desired. Also note that the Durock must have a coating of USG bonding agent.
As for the returns the plaster will start to fail at about 180 / 220 Deg.
Follow Mark suggestion & use some type of stone or tile.
