So I need to pour 3 footers about .25 cubic yards a hole

these will be 2 foot deep 2 foot wide

The concrete company charges for 4 yard minimum

So I am looking at renting a mixer but it will be 15 bags a hole

Just looking for some advice

That sounds like a "mix your own" job for sure. Just rent a reasonable mixer, not one of the tinker toys and keep the beer on ice for the helpers until the job is done. You can do it by yourself, but can you drink all of that beer?

Around here you can get a 1 yard load with a trailer. Don't know if they offer that in your area
Check with your local building supply places. I have several near me where I can get one of these....They mix up the concrete there...and the rotating tub keeps it mixed until your ready to dump it.

Runs about $135 for a yard....and they let you keep it for 2 hours.

I've done the 15 bags of concrete trick. Never again. You will spend more time loading and unloading 45 bags than you will picking up the trailer and filling your holes.

Downside.....if you are over, you will have to find a spot to dump the remaining concrete...and you have to return the thing clean...so your going to need a clean out tub.

Most guys did a hole and dump it there....just before it dries, break it up into smaller parts that you can toss into the trash.

Or plan a second project and use any remaining concrete on it.

I agree the 45 bags is a pain, but you can work at your own pace, to a point. The rental on a mixer is low so a couple of days or a weekend isn't a problem.

Dumping the excess from a ready mix and washing it out can be a pain if you don't have a place to do so.

You might find a place to buy the bags that will deliver on a pallet. Then a good hand truck from there.

The mixer rental plus 45 sacks of quikcrete is more expensive than the self-haul concrete in my area. About $200 (HD pricing) versus $129 for a 3/4 yard trailer load.

Why would I want to subject myself to lifting that many 80lb bags, multiple times ? And pay more for the "pleasure" of doing so.

You can also get to the beer cooler quicker by the self haul method.

And you have to consider the 'beer factor'. Doing that many bags by hand is going to take a lot of beers. Lift 5 bags....drink a beer....5 more bags....another beer. Pretty soon your'e sending the wife to the store for more beer.

It's a vicious cycle.

That 5 bag, one beer method, can make you pay in more ways than one. I've seen a lot of poorly finished concrete by guys that use it.
Me thinks we both have 'way' too much experience with this.

1 guy should be able to do that in a day even using the little 1 1/2sack elec mixer,,, the difference is you don't DO that work, do you ? so you're not in shape for it,,, we'll reach our limit at about 80b BUT that's 3 guys & we have the sacks next to the forms,,, after that, its redi-mix - 5cy min @ $ 125cy

If the footings aren't exposed at all, and are buried completely, I would skip the bags and use #1 washed stone, torpedo sand, and portland cement at a 3:2:1 ratio and save some money. If you can't source the stone and sand easily, you might be stuck with bags.
