Makes sense. That would make then 15" oc.

I guess I should what thought of that before I asked such a dumb ? :jester:.

It's better to get some opinions rather than second guess yourself after doing it. If you were going with 5/4 or composite, I think 12" centers would be more appropriate. Steps can take a lot of abuse.

4 stringers supporting a 5' wide staircase would give you 20" o.c. -
0", 20", 40", 60"
That would work for wood 2x6 treads - if you're using composite, step up to 5 stringers -
0", 15", 30", 45", 60"

Think about using strongbacks if your staircase if longer than 10 treads.
Strongback = 2x6 glued and nailed to bottom edge of 2x12 stringer, should come up to junction of tread/riser cutout.

In the pic below, the strongback is the grey box. Install them on the sides of all your stringers and block between the stringers where each handrail post is attached.
