I am finishing my basement and have one area that will have 8 50w potlights. Can I put them all in a single Dimmer switch?

Short answer Yes

What is the Max rating for the fixture - 50 watts?

8 * 50 = 400 watts

Most dimmers can handle 600 watts, other models handle more
