Home Depot advised not to sand pressure treated wood. My deck is pretty old (not to sure how old b/c we bought a second handed house). How do I tell whether it is made of pressure treated wood?

P.S. One of my coworker just told me his deck is pressure treated, and he sand it and he is still alive and healthy. Should we really care about the rule?

Thanks

Your deck is almost certainly pressure treated. It contains Arsenic. (you know, that poison that killed napoleon?) I certainly wouldn't want someone sanding it at my house.

go back to home depot. look at the pressure treated deck boards and then look at the cedar deck boards. the grains and knots of the two woods are very distinct from each other. and yes, you'll get sick from sanding pressure treated lumber.
