Hooooly s***, 130 PSI?

1522 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  ZZZZZ
I tested my water pressure both inside and outside the house, and it's 130 PSI! This can't be right! No wonder my washer kept blowing water lines off their fittings!
Does this mean the water regulator off the main line is bad?
And how worried should I be about this?
By the way, that gauge actually spiked to almost 200 PSI when I first turned on the water. I had manually reset it before taking the pic.
Could the gauge be bad?

Even with a bad regulator, that is still way too high. Assuming you're not on a well, call your local water department.

Yes, you should be concerned.

it's possible the gauge could be bad, but I doubt it. You have verifiable proof that pressure is way too high by the blowing off of fittings.

Call your water department and ask them what pressure they are sending out.

This should be addressed with a water pressure reducer valve on the main line coming into the house before any fixtures to get your pressure under control. Normal house pressure is 50-55 psi.

Also if you have a water heater xpansion tank check and make sure that it is set to the incoming water pressure. normally around 50-55 psi.

It's right. It's not GOOD... but it's right and fairly common too.

You'll need a pressure regulator or two (I use two).
My first one reduces to about 90psi which feeds ONE hosebib.
My second one reduces to a more common 60psi for everything else.

Get a few permanent mounted gauges too.
One at each end of the regulators.

Well, I'm a dope. I realized the valve I tested was actually before the regulator, not after. I adjusted the regulator, and with the water open its now around 55 PSI. Whew!

Be real sure since this practice is NOT common at all.

Still. 130 from the city pipeline is damned high. I'd talk to the water department.
