Just wondering what some of you think about cabinets from home centers like the Depot?

My experiences have never been smooth

• Always short parts
• Broken cabinets seem to be common
• Huge delays in the schedule due to the mistakes from the home centers and the cabinet companies they use.
• Wrong parts delivered
• Fine adjustments always take a lot of time because the factory just slapped things together.

There are many other drawbacks but I think I should leave room for you to comment.

...they actually told me on one that the damage was on the inside of the cabinet & wouldn't really be seen. I asked him if he was 'n serious

I am a contractor in Kansas City and although they are local they have been the best cabinet company I have ever worked with. The great thing about them is that they ship Nation wide to any one. So if I have a job in Texas they can ship them straight to the site. And with all wood construction you really can not go wrong.

It's all in what you want. If you buy their bargain priced store brand stuff, then you'll get all of the problems that you mentioned. They also sell some higher grade stuff that is pretty decent, but you'll pay the money for it too. The last kitchen I installed was bought at HD. Solid plywood boxes and solid oak fronts with solid oak raised panel doors and Blum hardware. The customer ordered the cabinets, but I was along and made sure that they included everything, like fillers and blanks. I reviewed the entire order before I left them place it. Everything that was delivered was correct. They weren't the happy handyman specials that you see advertised in the Sunday paper though.

I had occasion to modify an off the shelf, pre-built base cabinet from HD. When I removed the packaging the first thing I saw was that the single top drawer with Euro-Slides was way out of level. The back of the drawer was down 3-4" from the front. The drawer was not broken, the whole drawer with slides attached was canted down in the back.

Since there was no top yet on the base cabinet, I reached behind the drawer and with a moderate pull was able to swing the whole drawer, with slides, back up to where it was level with the front.

On inspection I found that the section of the Euro-Slide mounted to the cabinet had NO screws. The front end of the slide was built with a flange that clipped over the front cabinet rail under the drawer. The back of the slide was held in by a Friction gizmo against the cabinet back.

During shipping there must have been some bounces, so the drawer slipped. I put fasteners on the back of the slides so it wouldn't slip again like during the nexr California Earthquake or if the owner happened to put anything in that drawer.

Later I modified the drawer by shortning it drastically to accommodate a small vanity sink. When I pulled off the slides mounted to the drawer that's what I did, pulled them off. There were NO screws holding the slide to the drawer. There were screw holes in the slide, but no screws. The slides were held in by flanges in the slide that clipped around the bottom the the drawer sides.

I put new much shorter Euro-Slides on the shorter drawer.

we will be redoing the kitchen in our house next spring/summer with new cabinets. after looking at all the pre built stuff i am leaning towards spending more money on new tools and making my own cabinets and whatnot. the doors and hinges seemed nice but they lose me on the drawers with the bottoms hot glued in and the cheap slides that Palibob posted above me. i dont even really have a problem with the use of MDF in the case. but the drawers really bug me. also the lowes cabinets looked nice but had no variety in the grain on the doors and face. it looks waaaay too uniform for our tastes.

we looked into refacing the existing cabinets with new doors, hinges, drawer faces and laminate over the face. since there are 25 doors in at least 8 different sizes and one of them is 22"x22" the cost got way out of hand and we would still have the crappy old cabinets.

those look nice and very comparable to the Lowe's prices.

how are the drawers?

is there variety in the grain patterns?

Depending on the Finish that you order the drawers may be different. But from what I hear they will soon be offering self-closing glides! which I think is great. In their elite line the drawers are all solid wood, and that is what I prefer.

On the grain pattern it does have a slight variance which gives the kitchen more Characteristic. Also that depends on which finish as well.

The best thing about it is they keep every thing in stock so its to you in a matter of like a week...
