We purchased a home not lone ago and the gas heating unit is in a semi type hall closet. The closet is about 2 1/2 feet wide and 4 1/2 feet long. Looking up, I see silver ductwork running in several directions and then I see the roof of the house. Is this normal? This "closet" has no ceiling, just the roof ! Advice needed.

It could that way to allow fresh combustion air for the furnace.

I can't give you the exact correct answer on this, but these units are very common in my area and they are all that way, with the opening at the top. Maybe it does have something to do with ventilation for combustion IF you have gas heat. However, I do know this, my Mom's house had an infiltration of honey bees a few years ago in the attic. These bees made their way into this HVAC closet and through the cracks of the door to the closet into the house. Quite a scare for her! After we got rid of the bee problem I placed screen wire over the opening so there could be ventilation but keep the buggies out. My two cents worth, David.

Good idea. We do have a lot of bats in this area.

I'd almost guarantee that they're combustion air vents, and they are needed/required. The screen wire idea is a good one! If the furnace is in a hallway and not in a closet that opens via a bedroom, another option is to install a fully louvered door.
