Hey gang,

We have a high efficiency furnace, installed 2 years ago. Well I am downstairs the other day and notice a water drip hanging on the outside of one of the exhaust pipes. So that tells me it is leaking the condensed water.

It looks to be leaking from the joint between the two 22 deg elbows.

Sorry for the glare on the first photo.

Can I fix this myself by
1) Applying some ABS glue to the small gap between the 22's - if so, can I use plain ABS glue.

2) Cut the pipe above and below the 22 elbows and install new pipe - if so, could I get this pipe and elbows at HD again, what kind of glue? And can I use a hacksaw to cut this?

Or should I bring in a professional.

You can cut it out and make up a new joint. I have not seen many systems where the pipe are so tight not to allow some movement so that you can install glue in couplings. If they are so tight you can use a fernco or a no-hub

Yes, you can fix it yourself. Use your hack saw and cut above and below the 45's. You can pick those up at any hardware store. buy some PVC glue, PVC cleaner and a short piece of pipe. The cleaner is very important, especially on the exhaust. Have fun

Wow thanks for the quick responses.

Yeah, my first thought was about flue gases in the house.

Do I have to be worried about shavings from the hacksaw falling into the furnace?

With this being on the exhaust and with such a small amount then no.

Just be careful when cutting and if some large pieces come loose and fall you will have to remove them. Otherwise the inducer motor will blow out the small shavings

Just asking your area requires Sch40. Here they allow celcore?

Where are you located Kenm

I'am in Alabama....If you can show the inspector where the installation instructions approve the use of any other material you are ok..if not sch 40 must be used......you also have to use a purple primer on the joints ( this goes for plumbing also)..Of course I have seen them vented with D.W. vent... Must have been a hacker
