For cleanouts outside foundation wall...
I hear it is tough to guide the snake in the proper direction.

Would a wye or combo that just allows downstream snaking be preferable?
I guess you COULD snake the toilet for clogs upstream of the cleanout.

Or some other fitting?

Have you ever seen septic line piping in a trench?

The concern is that it will be difficult to direct the snake in the desired direction of a clogged line (full of water).
So you say no problem with this fitting?

I'm considering 2 cleanouts (one for upstream, one downstream) but it seems overkill and kind of an eyesore.

Combo's for clean outs is against code except for the city clean out. for the home you'll need to have a 2 way clean out, codes may vary. and as for the snake going in the wrong direction that would fall under experience. :wink:

You're spot on about codes varying. We can only use combos or approved 2-way clean outs.

Did they not have a clean out/vent pipe on them?
How was that pipe oriented relative to the waste flow?

I'm replacing and realigning the existing cast iron with ABS.
I was planning to use a wye or combo like your drawing but with a vertical riser.
Then I discovered the double clean out so the upstream direction could be snaked too.
I heard or read that these fittings are a PITA to snake cause its hard to guide the snake the desired direction. The question is whether I should use a double clean out.

Just curious, why would a combo with vertical riser be against code for a clean out outside the building?

Now this kind would be a problem getting it to go opposite direction. But mine is straight up in the yard. No problem going either direction I thought they only used this kind above in a basement or crawlspace.

How deep is the line? If you're terribly deep, i can see how it might be difficult to send it the way you want it.


I just ran a snake up a 2 way cleanout that was about 2ft below grade without any problems.

Granted, once you're in the line, you're ONLY snaking the mainline. Any branches that are clogged individually are not accessible from the 2 way.

I've seen some change and straighten up (like for a deep trench in a short front yard)... but I've never seen any where the first fitting at the bottom isn't made with that wye/45.

I'm only about 2 ft deep so it is sounding like its a non issue.
No existing clean out so anything is an improvement!

I just want to add : One thing that I DO like about a 2 way cleanout as opposed to a wye/45 is that once you think you've got the clog busted loose, you can physically see the water flowing through the pipe. Whether it's used for snaking or not, it serves as a good inspection point.
