Stained deck in semitransparent stain. Was told to fill holes so I did and was left with awful blotch marks that will not cover. Stripping isn’t an option at this point. Can semitransparent stain be painted over. I am at the point that I do not care if I have to repaint every single year.

It is called 'semi transparent' for a reason ...... which is, you can 'see through it'.

Yes, you can paint over it, but let it weather a bit first, like a couple months. Use the SAME vehicle base as the semi (water or oil).

A lot depends on what semi-transparent stain you used. Some have a specific recoat window and after that window is passed you need to either remove the stain or wait for it to weather. Other than that you can use a solid body deck stain over the semi-transparent. I would not recommend using paint on decking!


What kind of holes were filled?
